Mark Duncan, DDS, FAGD, DICOI

I was born on Lackland Air Force Base and grew up in south Florida. During the 1979 race riots, my family decided that Dade County wasn't the place to raise children, and moved to Oklahoma. I graduated from Tulsa Union and then went to OU. I had planned to become a physician, but after meeting Susan (my future wife), her father introduced me to dentistry. I will forever be indebted to him - dentistry is such a dynamic and rewarding profession, I wouldn't want to do anything else!

Many people have asked why I would want to be a dentist, and my mother even feared that I would get bored with it! What they didn't really understand is how incredibly dynamic and advanced dentistry has become. The technology is progressing at an incredible pace and we are no longer forced to simply patch or remove teeth. We can actually rebuild them in ways that are not only stronger, but also look incredible. It is not uncommon to have someone shed tears of joy when they see their smile for the first time - that is something that you just can't get bored with!

One of the things that shaped my practice more than anything is my training beyond dental school. We are fortunate that the OU College of Dentistry does such an incredible job of training dentists in the basics of modern dentistry, however there is so much to learn past that. I have averaged nearly 10 times the required hours of CE since graduating. This has allowed me to sharpening my skills and ability to deliver high quality dentistry. I have studied with the giants in the fields of cosmetics, dental implants, and occlusion (study of your bite). I also have been have been honored to be asked by the prestigious Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies (LVI) to join them as a Clinical Instructor and help to educate and train dentists from around the world in these advanced techniques. This is an honor that is shared with fewer than 100 dentists worldwide! The most wonderful thing about this honor teaching is that it allows me to work intimately with some of the best minds in dentistry and bring the advances home to my patients. I would like to invite you to experience the advantages of high quality and cosmetic dentistry has to offer.

I am also honored to be recognized as a two-time winner of the Platinum Eagle award by the ODA for my dedication to continued learning. I was also awarded the Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry. Additionally, I hold Diplomate status with the International Congress of Oral Implantologists and Implant Fellow with the Misch International Implant Institute. These are all wonderful honors that were granted by some of the most highly respected clinicians in the world. As great as they are, they are really just by products of my efforts to stay current in an ever-changing profession. Another great privilege honor has been more recently granted; I have developed hands on training programs for dentists in cosmetic techniques. The first program was The Power of Aesthetic Dentistry and focused on the impact aesthetic dentistry can have. The success of this program has lead brought forth to the need to develop a more comprehensive program, Evolutionary Aesthetics. It is a tremendous honor to be asked by your peers to help them to understand and master these concepts and techniques.

Although changing lives is extremely rewarding professionally, there is another side. Susan and I have been together for nearly 16 years and are thoroughly enjoying our two children. Faryn is a third grader and defines the term 'daddy's girl'. We have always had a very close relationship and the blessing in life will be to get to keep it! Our son, Eli, is every bit as rambunctious and excitable a boy as I was. I worry that we will pay for what we put our parents through! He is in pre-K, and is amazing everyday. I had no idea how incredible children can be - and I would be happy to share pictures or stories whenever you would like!
